During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 21-year-old actor spoke candidly about navigating life with the disorder she was formally diagnosed with around the age of 12.
“It’s not something I know everything about,” Madison said. “I’m figuring it out day by day on my own. I’m not a therapy person.”
“I’m very internal with the way that I like to deal with things, and I like to self-educate on a lot of things.”
“I got my diagnosis, and that’s what I needed — a word to call it other than ‘crazy.’ I started realizing my own triggers.”
Madison admitted she was able to learn a lot about the disorder, including how it impacts her personal interests and emotions.
“Likes and dislikes change often, so my aesthetic changes often. My music taste changes often. I have a very broad personality, which allows me to connect with a lot of people.”
“Being sensitive was such a hard thing [and] that’s another one of the main components of this disorder — having an exposed nerve to every emotion and feeling.”
“But it allows me to connect with so many more people. I’m able to put myself in other people’s shoes easily, and deliver empathy with authenticity.”
And in order to help manage her disorder, Madison has turned to meditating and crystals. Acting has also been a positive outlet for her “on days when it’s really hard to be myself, it’s really easy to be somebody else.”
You can see how she can empathize with her character Kiara’s ability to fit into a few different groups in Netflix’s new hit show, Outer Banks.
